User Log In System

I am developing a Office Manager Web Application that will create and keep track of invoices, customers, inventory, employee time and a few other things. I am at a point in the process where I need to log the user in with a username and password but don't really know how or where to start, I have googled but haven't really found anything for a beginner to learn from.

is there any tutorials or web resources that someone could point me to and get me started on this?

any help would be appreciated!
